Technology Planning
- Assist in development of strategic goals.
- Answer the question, “How can technology help me achieve these goals?”
- Ascertain status of existing infrastructure with documentation of existing processes through flow diagrams (PFDs) or P&IDs and through written descriptions.
- Define hardware and software products that can be the building blocks of a long-term control and information support infrastructure.
- Interview plant personnel for input on what improvements should be made.
- Identify and prioritize projects based on client’s objectives and capabilities.
- Define costs for preliminary engineering and planning. Develop budgetary cost for the controls, instrumentation and information system hardware, software and installation.
- Develop an implementation schedule for the work based on client needs and fiscal constraints.

Preliminary Engineering Basis of Design Report (BODR)
- Prepare for internal and external review and approval; the BODR becomes the guide for all subsequent design activities. The BODR typically contains the following design criteria:
